On Monday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Robert Leigh Turner, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Ukraine. In the beginning of the meeting, V.Lytvyn stressed that Ukraine valued good relations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Ambassador highly appreciated development of democracy in Ukraine and underscored the importance of the parliament in such processes.
According to V.Lytvyn, in a present-day difficult economic situation, "Ukraine should pass an exam for the maturity of democracy, as economic problems can lead to the shutdown of democratic institutes, which can result in dictatorship".
Therefore, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed the importance of further development of institutes of civil society.
The Parties exchanged their opinions concerning importance of parliaments in the period of financial and economic crisis, and predicted political situation in Ukraine.
Answering the questions of the Ambassador, V.Lytvyn rejected the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections.
To settle the situation in the country, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine deems necessary to secure dialogue between the branches of authority and politicians, take into account the attitude of the population and reject unpredictable actions in foreign policy.
The Head of the Parliament believes that securing of activity of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is his crucial duty.
